Large Format Optics
Having already produced a 610mm diameter corrector lens for an astronomy application, Phoenix are working with OpTIC and key freeform process equipment suppliers to explore opportunities for large format optics production.
OpTIC host the UK’s National Facility for Ultra Precision Surfaces and the EPSRC’s Integrated Knowledge Centre (IKC) is built upon a collaboration with Cranfield, University College London, Cambridge University and OpTIC. It provides a unique facility for nano-scale precision generating, polishing and measurement of ultra smooth, non-conformal and micro-structured surfaces.
The vision of the IKC is to establish a state of the art manufacturing capability for ultra precision surfaces and to use the accumulating experience to support the development of UK industry.
There are active projects in place at OpTIC using the most advanced CNC polishing and machining equipment available in the world. These will develop the national capability for manufacture of high quality segments for extra large telescopes and other applications.
Phoenix have the ability to generate, smooth and polish large format spherical optics up to 620mm diameter with active plans to enhance this capability to include aspherical surfacing.
